POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- Cortland defeated Union in four games at the Vassar Invitational Friday night. The Dutchwomen fell to 2-4 on the young season, and continue play in the tournament Saturday.
Tiffany Chatman and sophomore outside-hitter, Kelsey Muka led the Red Dragons in the 30-14 Game 1 win and continued to star throughout the match with 24 total kills, accounting for over 75% of the Dragons offense.
Union attempted to come back in Games 2, but suffered a 30-22 loss. The Dutchwomen stayed alive in Game 3, winning 34-32 highlighted by Julie La Spina (Roslyn Heights, NY/Roslyn), who had a solid match with five kills and 14 digs. Cortland won the fourth contest, 30-18.
Invitational action continues for all teams on Saturday, September 9 at Vassar's Athletic Center. At 10 am, host Vassar meets Cortland. The Noon matches feature Cortland vs. Hunter and Union meeting Skidmore. The final matches, at 2:00 pm, pit Vassar against Skidmore and Union vs. Hunter.
