SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore forward Harlee Wood (Clinton, MD/Bishop McNamara) scored a game high 16 points and senior forward Nick Jones (Washington, DC) had a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds as Hamilton defeated Union, 79-59 in a Liberty League men's basketball contest Friday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.
The Continentals tied the Dutchmen atop the league standings with a 3-1 record, while improving to 6-8 overall. The Dutchmen (6-8) had a three-game winning streak snapped. Jay Simpson (Fort Washington, MD/Saint Johns College High) added 15 points for Hamilton, which outrebounded Union, 38-28 and shot 49% for the game. Hamilton shot 50% (15-30) in the second half after leading 38-29 at halftime.
Union was led by sophomore forward
Drew Desmarais (St. James, NY/Smithtown) as he tied Wood with a game high 16 points, and led the Dutchmen with nine rebounds.
Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored 10 points and
Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) pulled down eight rebounds for Union, which shot 41% for the night. With the game tied at 27-27 with 5:40 left in the first half, the Continentals went on an 11-0 run in the next five minutes for a 38-27 lead with 40 seconds left in the first.
Union got as close as nine at 51-42 with 14:18 left in the second stanza, but the Continentals went on a 18-2 run in the next 6:34 for a 25-point advantage, the biggest lead of the night (69-44).
The Dutchmen host Hobart Saturday at 4 p.m. while Hamilton plays at Skidmore Saturday.
