Hammond, Dwyer lead 73-59 basketball win at Springfield

Michelle Rogers had a season high in rebounds.

SPRINGFIELD, MA -- Union outscored host Springfield 41-27 in the second half en route to a 73-59 women's basketball win in the consolation game of the Holiday Inn/Naismith Classic Wednesday afternoon. The Dutchwomen improved to 3-5, and senior forward Krystal Hammond (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was named to the All-Tournament team. She led all players with 18 points. Sophomore forward Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had a game and season high nine rebounds while adding 10 points for Union.

Sophomore guard Selin Whitham (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor) dished out a game high six assists for the Dutchwomen, tying her season high, while sophomore guard Maria Tobin (Schenectady, NY/Bishop Maginn) scored 11 points.

Springfield had four players in double figures, led by Christine Cotter, who scored 17 with six assists, and Tara McCarthy, who had 14 points. Corey Finch added 12 for the Pride (4-6).

The teams were tied at 32-32 at halftime, but the Pride took a five-point lead at 39-34 with 2:55 gone in the second half. Union went on a 9-0 run for a 43-39 lead with 14:33 left in the second half. Springfield took the lead for the final time at 51-50 with 9:41 remaining on a jumper by Finch. But Union put the game away with a 12-1 run in the next 6:10. Union led by as many as 17 (73-56).

Union shot 48% for the game, including 50% in the big second half. The Dutchwomen forced 21 turnovers and made 36% of the three-point attempts.

Bowdoin, ranked #1 in the nation in D3hoops.com's latest poll, won the tourney championship game with a 46-31 victory over Norwich. Joining Hammond on the All-Tournament Team were Bowdoin's Elieen Flaherty (the tourney MVP), Bowdoin's Jill Anelauskas, Norwich teammates Caitlin Bailey and Kristi Powlovich, and Springfield's Christine Cotter.

The Dutchwomen will play a non-league game at Drew Saturday at 2 p.m. and open Liberty League play at Skidmore on January 9.
