Field hockey loses 2-1 in OT to St. Lawrence

SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior Julia Kiernan (Greenwich, CT) scored just 3:34 into overtime to lift St. Lawrence to a 2-1 come from behind Liberty League field hockey victory over Union College at Frank Bailey Field Friday afternoon.

The teams entered the day tied for third in the Liberty League standings. But the win lifts the Saints, 11-2 overall, to 4-2 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen fall to 3-3 in the league (and 10-5 overall).

Kiernan shot from the middle, from 20 yards out through traffic and notched her fourth of the season for the Saints. Meg Danielson (Shelburne, VT) assisted on the tally that lifted St. Lawrence to a fifth straight victory. The Saints had tied the game at 59:12 when Jennifer Stetson (Bristol, VT) scored from the top of the circle off a corner from Mackenzie Kersen (Boonton Township, NJ).

After a scoreless first half, Union opened the scoring when freshman forward Kelsey Powers (Naples, ME) scored at the 46:40 mark. Powers shot to the high left of the net off a deflected feed from teammate Lizzy Moran (Unionville, PA). The goal by Powers was her eighth of the year, which ties her for the Union team lead.

The Dutchwomen had a 19-8 shot advantage in the game, including 10-4 in the first half. Union also had the advantage in corners, 11-9. Senior goaltender Lindsey Taylor (Rutland, VT) made eight saves for the Saints while junior goalie Liz Stanford (Acton, MA) stopped four shots for the hosts. Union freshman Tyler Willey (Stockton, NJ) led all players with three shots on net.

Union can clinch a berth in the upcoming Liberty League tournament with a win Saturday, as the Dutchwomen host Hamilton at 2 p.m. at Bailey Field. St. Lawrence plays at Skidmore Saturday at 2 p.m., and Skidmore stands second in the league while the Saints are now in sole possession of third place. Saturday's action wraps up Liberty League regular season play for all teams.
