SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior outside hitter Caity Welch (St. Verplanck, NY) had 20 digs, six kills and three service aces, including a service ace on match point, to lift SUNY Oneonta to a five-game comeback victory over Union in non-league women's volleyball action at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night.
The Red Dragons lost the first two games by scores of 30-15 and 30-25, but stormed back by winning the next three, 30-24, 30-27 and 15-12 to snap a three-match losing streak and improve to 18-20. Union fell to 24-11 on the night of the final home match of the season for the Dutchwomen.
The final game was tied as late as 11-11. With Oneonta up 13-12, right side senior Morgan Brooks (Beaver Dams, NY) had a kill to set up the winning point. Welch that served deep in mid court for a service ace that clinched the comeback triumph.
Sophomore Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA) led the hosts with 43 assists, five kills and 11 digs, while Veronica Mynders (Port Jervis, NY) had 23 digs. Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY) recorded 14 kills and five blocks and Erica VanValkenburg (Cicero, NY) had 22 digs with eight kills. Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) added 14 kills with six blocks for Union.
Katie Darcangelo (Corning, NY) had 26 digs and four aces for the Red Dragons, while Caitlin Ross (Ballston Lake, NY) had 12 kills along with 12 digs. Morgan Brooks (Beaver Dams, NY) added 12 kills and two block assists while Jess Ptsasnick (Wingdale, NY) (31 assists, 13 digs) and Ashley Gerace (East Greenbush, NY) (13 assists, six aces and five digs) also boosted the Oneonta victory.
Both teams now prepare for the league tournaments. Oneonta competes at the SUNYAC Tournament at Cortland November 1-3, while Union plays at the Liberty League Championships Friday and Saturday at Clarkson.
