POTSDAM, NY -- The Union women's volleyball team lost three times during the regular season to Skidmore, but beat the Thoroughbreds in the most important match of the season. Union downed Skidmore in four games in the first round of the Liberty League Championships Friday. Junior middle hitter Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) had a tremendous performance for the Dutchwomen, with 12 blocks, 19 digs and 16 kills.

With the win, Union improved to 25-11 while Skidmore fell to 26-9. The Dutchwomen won by scores of 30-28, 23-30, 30-24 and 30-28.

Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA) had 43 assists, 10 blocks and 12 digs. Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY) finished the match with 12 kills and 10 blocks for the Dutchwomen, and Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY) added 11 kills and six blocks and Veronica Mynders (Port Jervis, NY) posted 26 digs.

Later Friday night, Union set a new single season victory record, breaking the 2002 mark of 25 wins, with a five game triumph over Vassar. The Dutchwomen won 30-23, 24-30, 30-26, 18-30 and 15-11. In this match. Ormsby had 22 kills, 14 digs and seven blocks, and Schumaker had 10 kills in the win. LaSpina posted 13 kills and Merinder had 47 assists. Mynders also boosted the Union triumph with 24 digs. Merinder also set a new single season assists record in this match.

The Dutchwomen face Clarkson and St. Lawrence Saturday.
