POTSDAM, NY -- With victories over Clarkson and St. Lawrence Saturday, the Union College women's volleyball team swept all league foes and won the Liberty League Championship Saturday at Clarkson. It is the first Liberty League title for Coach Sandy Collins and Union.
The Dutchwomen defeated Clarkson in a five game comeback, then swept St. Lawrence to go 4-0 in the two day tourney and improve to 28-11 overall. This is the most wins in Union history, and the program began in 1975.
The Liberty League all-star teams were announced and three Dutchwomen were honored. Union was represented on the first team by Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) and Veronica Mynders (Port Jervis, NY), while Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY) was selected to the second team.
Union lost the first two matches to Clarkson, 28-30 and 26-30, but the Dutchwomen stormed back to take the match victory by scores of 30-24, 30-15 and 15-12. Ormsby had 26 digs, 21 kills and seven digs, while Mynders has 34 digs to eclipse the 1,000 dig mark for the 2007 season. Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA) dished out 45 assists and Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY) added 15 kills. Schumaker added five blocks and eight kills and freshman Bridget Little (Glenville, NY) had 12 kills and three blocks in the win.
The Dutchwomen swept the tourney by sweeping St. Lawrence. Union was victorious by scores of 30-23, 30-27 and 30-22. Schumaker had 17 kills and six blocks, and Ormsby posted nine blocks, 11 kills and nine kills. LaSpina had nine kills and Merinder posted 32 assists with nine digs while Mynders added 14 digs.
