SCHENECTADY, NY –Senior captain Devon Ciliberto (New Paltz, NY) scored a season high 19 points and added eight rebounds while junior Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) added 18 points with a team best nine rebounds to lead Union College to a 70-61 non-league women's basketball win Friday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday night. Union improved to 4-3 on the season while the Pride fell to 4-4.
Maria Tobin (Schenectady, NY) had 13 points for Union, which led 30-25 at halftime and shot 39%. Junior center Lauren O'Connor (Valhalla, NY) had a double double for Springfield with 17 points and 10 rebounds and senior guard Christine Cotter (Stoughton, MA) scored 14 points for the Pride. Corey Finch (Hanover, PA) scored 11 points for the vistitors, who shot 41% for the game. Union forced 23 turnovers while the Pride forced 19 on the night.
Springfield jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first 3:47 but Union tied the contest at 18-18 with 9:52 left. After the Pride had a 23-20 lead with 6:01 remaining in the first stanza, the Dutchwomen went on a 10-2 run in the next 2:32 for a 30-25 lead with 3:29 left. Neither team scored the rest of the first half, and Union scored 12 first half points off turnovers.
Ciliberto scored 16 of her points in the second half. Her two free throws with 16:24 left made it 41-30. The Pride got as close as three at 55-52 with a three point play by Tara McCarthy (Bristol, RI) with 5:38 remaining. But moments later Ciliberto hit a three and Union began a 12-5 run for a 67-57 lead with 29 seconds left to play. Ciliberto had eight points during that run. The largest lead was 12 at 70-58 with 10 ticks remaining.
Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY) scored six points with three steals and Tobin led the Dutchwomen with four assists. McCarthy scored seven for the Pride, which shot 67% on the night from the line. Union made 24 of 29 free throws (83%) for the contest.
Union closes out the 2007 portion of the schedule with a game at Hartwick on Tuesday, December 18.
