SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Skidmore College midfielder Tom Levesque scored six goals and had two assists to lead the Thoroughbreds to a 17-8 Liberty League men's lacrosse win over Union College, Saturday at Wachenheim Field. Chris Colllison (Trumbull, CT/ Trumbull) led Union with two goals and an assist.
The win keeps Skidmore (4-6) perfect in Liberty play at 3-0 and clinches a playoff spot for the Thoroughbreds who still have three league games remaining.
The game was close in the first half. Chuck McNeil and Levesque gave Skidmore an early 2-0 lead. Union (0-3, 3-7) would tie it on goals eight seconds apart from Peter Kennedy (Needham, MA/ Northfield Mt. Hermon) and Kevin Rautenstrauch (W. Seneca, NY/ St. Francis) to end the quarter 2-2.
The Dutchmen came out strong in the second with a pair of goals by Collison at 12:48 and 9:52. The Thoroughbreds responded with four straight goals, including three goals in a 2:14 span to take a 6-4 lead at the half. Levesque scored two of the four goals and John Kotsinonos and Nick Coppola had the other two.
Union looked to get back into the game when Jon Miller (Yarmouth, ME/ Yarmouth) scored at 14:11 of the third to cut the Skidmore lead to one, 6-5.
That would be as close as the Dutchmen would get. The Thoroughbreds dominated the remainder of the quarter with eight straight goals.
Skidmore extended the run to 11 with the first three tallies of the fourth. Michah Hawes-Sivitz scored four of the goals in the 11-0 run, while Levesque had three and two assists.
Thoroughbred goalie John Capitani earned the win with nine saves in 48:59. Flip Bongaerts played the final 11 minutes, stopping two shots.
Union goalies Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT/ New Canaan), Rahde Franke (Harwood, MD/ Mercersburg Academy), and Christopher Keinath (Wilbraham, MA/ Minnechaug Regional) combined for 18 saves.
Union is back in action on April 18 in a 4 pm game at Vassar.
