ONEONTA, NY -- The Union women's volleyball team, which features five freshmen and no seniors this season, opened the 2007 campaign with a pair of grueling five-game victories at the Red Dragon Invitational at SUNY Oneonta Friday.
Union defeated Hartwick in the season opener. The Dutchwomen won the match after avoiding a big comeback. Union won the first two games, 30-27 and 30-25, but Hartwick stayed alive with a 33-31 win in the fourth game, and another 33-31 triumph in the fourth. The Dutchwomen clinched the match with a 15-6 victory in the fifth contest.
Sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA) led the Dutchwomen with 51 assists while sophomore defensive specialist Veronica Mynders (Port Jervis, NY) had a school record 40 digs. The previous record was 38 set by Corinn Jordan in 2002. Junior middle hitter Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY), who plays for the Union women's basketball team, made her volleyball debut for the Dutchwomen with 19 kills.
The Dutchwomen had another long set in a late night match against Liberty League foe Clarkson. Union won 30-22, lost 27-30, and lost the third game, 30-26, but came back this time for a 30-20 win and a 15-10 win in the clincher.
In the nightcap, Mynders led the win with 36 digs and Merinder had 36 assists. Junior middle hitter Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY) added 16 kills.
Play continues for Union Saturday with a contest against FDU to open the day.
