SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior middle hitter Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY) had 20 kills, five solo blocks and four block assists while junior middle hitter Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) posted 27 digs, 11 kills and five solo blocks to lead Union to a 3-2 volleyball match win over Middlebury at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night.
Union is now 12-4, the best start since the 1979 Dutchwomen were 14-2 through the first 16 games.
Union won by scores of 30-24, 23-30, 30-27, 23-30 and 15-12. They trailed in the fifth game 6-2 but posted the comeback for the victory. Sophomore defensive specialist Veronica Mynders (Port Jervis, NY) had 36 digs and junior outside hitter Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY) recorded 13 digs for the victors.
Other highlights featured 52 assists with 18 digs by sophomore Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA) and nine kills and seven block assists by freshman Bridget Little (Glenville, NY).
Senior right hitter Lexie Fisher (San Francisco, CA) had 13 kills and Lauren Barrett (Medfield, MA) dished out 45 assists for the Panthers (7-5). Lindsay Patterson (Aspen, CO) had 21 digs and Whitney Bean (Waukee, IA) finished with five blocks. Middlebury received three service aces each to Mallory White (Colorado Springs, CO) and Lauren Barrett (Medfield, MA).
Union returns to action at the SUNY Oneonta Invitational Friday and Saturday, September 28 and 29.
