ELMIRA, NY – Senior midfielder
Dane Mellon (Clifton Park, NY) netted the game-winning goal in the first minute of the second overtime period to push the No.6 Union College Dutchmen (8-0) over Elmira (1-5-1) Wednesday afternoon.
Going into the second overtime,
Jon Bellock (Manchester, CT) played a corner kick perfectly to the right foot of Mellon, who then placed it by the Soaring Eagles defense, securing the eighth straight victory for the Dutchmen.
The game was a back-and- forth battle between the teams and was forced to take a brief intermission with about 20 minutes left in the match due to thunder and lightning.
Union College dominated for most of the first half play. Elmira had some chances throughout the half, but were unable to connect on any of their shots.
In the second half, Elmira started off quick, but were then forced to drop back from the ongoing pressure applied to their defensive third by Union's offense. Bellock and
Chris Poey (Amherst, MA) led the way for Union in the second half, each recording their fair share of shots on junior goalkeeper Jon DePrimo (Elmira, NY).
Going into the first overtime period, Elmira's Drew Kelsey (Salem, MA) unleashed a viscous shot from the top of Union's goal box. Union goalkeeper
Rob Kramer (Westport, CT) made the diving save to keep the Soaring Eagles off the board. .
As the first overtime winded down, neither team was able to connect offensively. Union did manage three shots in the period, while keeping Elmira without a shot.
Kramer made two saves in his fifth shutout of the season and fourth in a row. DePrimo stopped nine Union shots.
Union is back in action on Saturday in a 1:30 p.m. game at Babson.
