POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- The Vassar College Women's Volleyball Invitational ended with two exciting matches to decide the champion and runner-up teams. With a 4-0 record, SUNY-New Paltz earned the championship, while the hosting Brewers came in second at 3-1. Union and Skidmore both ended up with 2-2 records, Hunter went 1-3, and St. Josephs finished 0-4. Union is now 5-3 on the season.
The players selected to the all-tournament team were Kim Braga (Long Beach/Long Beach) from New Paltz, Tess Johnson (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) from Vassar, Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) from Union, Shanita Scott (Palham, NY/Palham Memorial) from Hunter, Erica Duncan (San Fransisco, CA/St. Ignatius) from Skidmore, and Kasey Wood (East Islip, NY/East Islip) from St. Josephs.
In their second game of the day, Vassar managed to sneak by Union College with an impressive 3-2 (23-30, 30-18, 25-30, 31-29, 15-13) win behind a huge game 4 comeback. In the first game of the match, Union took an early lead and rode it to a comfortable 30-23 win. Vassar used a similar approach in the second game, jumping out to a 17-11 lead and not allowing Union to crawl back in. The third game was more competitive and saw several lead changes until Union went on a 4-0 run to take a 20-15 lead which they would hold for a 30-25 win.
The match appeared to be in Union's control as they held a 26-18 game 4 lead. But Vassar put together a string of 5 straight points behind the service of Amanda Hsuing (Takoma Park, MD/Blair) to cut the lead to three, and later went on another 5-0 run to tie the game at 28 before the momentum carried Vassar to a 31-29 win. The final game was the most highly contested of the match, as the teams were tied nine different times before Vassar pulled ahead for the 15-13 win.
Union was led by Julie Laspina (Roslyn Heights, NY) with 15 kills, Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) with 11 kills; and Veronica Mynders (Port Jervis, NY) with 37 digs. Erika Van Valkenburg (Cicero, NY) had 18 digs and Jen Merrinder (Andover, MA) posted 42 assists;
Earlier in the day, the Dutchwomen downed Hunter in three games, 31-29, 30-18, and 30-25. Van Valkenburg had 13 kills, Ormsby posted 12 kills and Mynders had 30 digs. Merrinder dished out 30 assists.
The Dutchwomen host the Union Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
