GENEVA, NY—The 20th-ranked Union College women's soccer team defeated Elmira College 9-0 this afternoon on the first day of the Heron Cup. The Dutchwomen, who have not allowed a goal through the first three games of the season, improve to 3-0-0, while the Soaring Eagles drop to 0-2-0.
Sophomore
Allison Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA) and freshman
Katie McLean (Newton, MA) led the Union offense with two goals and an assist each, while senior
Bridget Duffy (Albany, NY) and junior
Ashley Brown (Plainville, CT) both added a goal and an assist. Also scoring for the Dutchwomen were senior
Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA), sophomore
Katie Weinstein (Marblehead, MA), and junior
Megan Bordino (New Paltz, NY).
Caitlin Cuozzo started the Union scoring, netting her lone goal and the eventual game-winner in the fifth minute of play. She was assisted by
Allison Cuozzo and Duffy.
Allison Cuozzo netted the next two goals, in the ninth and 19th minutes, respectively, and the Dutchwomen never looked back.
Union out shot Elmira 27-3, and held a 7-1 advantage on corner kick opportunities.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Melissa McDonald (Lynnfield, MA) recorded two saves for the Dutchwomen in her third shutout of the season, while senior
Meaghan Doherty (Albany, NY) collected six saves for the Soaring Eagles.
Union will take on Gettysburg tomorrow at 11 a.m. on Cozzens Field, followed by Elmira squaring off against tournament host William Smith at 2 p.m.
