SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore forward Erin Cunningham (Rockaway, NJ) scored 21 points and senior guard Paula Foote (Sidney, NY) scored 18 with four assists as William Smith defeated Union, 78-74 in overtime in Liberty League action at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday. The Herons, winners of 10 straight, improved to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in the league, while the Dutchwomen now stand 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the league.
Marsia Vespa (Watertown, NY) had 12 points, nine rebounds and five steals and four assists for the Herons, who shot 37% for the night and forced 29 Union turnovers.
Junior guard Maria Tobin (Schenectady, NY) led all players with 26 points, one point shy of her career high. She forced the overtime when she hit a three pointer from the left of the basket with just under two seconds remaining in regulation, making it 69-69. Junior center Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) had 20 points and 10 rebounds for her second double double of the weekend. Ormsby was honored before the game for her All-American exploits on the Union volleyball court this past fall. Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY) added 13 points for Union, which shot 54% and had a rebounding advantage, 44-38.
William Smith had a 38-33 lead at halftime, and led by six at 67-61 with 3:04 left in the second stanza. But Ormsby hit a three pointer at 2:48 and a Union layup by Lucia Reed (Braintree, MA) with 2:20 remaining pulled Union to within one at 67-66. Foote made a jumper at 2:05 for a three point Heron lead, and neither team could convert until Tobin's tying basket. Union took the lead in overtime on a Rogers layup at 4:34, but Cunningham made a three point play, with her free throw making it 72-71 with 4:24 left, and the Herons never relinquished the lead. Cunningham had seven of William Smith's nine overtime points.
Union is at Vassar Friday, while William Smith plays Tuesday at Hamilton.
