Rogers ties career high in 76-53 win over Hartwick

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior forward Michelle Rogers made 10 of 11 shots and tied her career high with 24 points to lead the Union women's basketball team to a 76-53 non-league victory over Hartwick Tuesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.


Senior guard Selin Whitham had eight assists with seven rebounds and junior guard Rachel Titcomb scored a career best 16 points. Maria Tobin added 11 points for the Dutchwomen (2-0).

Junior guard Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY) led Hartwick with team highs of 12 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, NJ) added 10 points. The Hawks, who forced 22 turnovers but had 21 on the night, fell to 2-3.


Union
shot 48% on the night while Hartwick was held to 28% shooting. The Dutchwomen had a 41-34 rebounding advantage in the triumph, and made seven of the eight free throws (88%). Hartwick went to the line 26 times and shot 73% from the stripe.

Rogers scored 24 points in a game at Skidmore last season. Whitham's eight assists were one shy of her career high, set last season against Middlebury.


The Dutchwomen took a 12 point lead into the locker room at 37-25. Hartwick had an 11-9 lead with 11:55 to go in the first half, but Union went on a 14-2 in the next 5:55 for a 23-13 lead that forced a timeout by the Hawks. Union's largest lead in the first half was 14, at 34-20 with 2:05 to go. The Dutchwomen outscored the Hawks in the paint in the first 20 minutes, 22-4, but Hartwick had 15 points off Union turnovers. A 12-2 Union run in the first 3:49, featuring six points by Rogers, made it a 22 point lead at 49-27. Union never led by less than 16 points the rest of the way and the largest lead was 25 at 69-44 with 4:37 to play.


The Dutchwomen return to the Viniar Athletic Center Sunday for a non-league contest against Williams at 2 p.m. Hartwick also plays a non-league game, Tuesday, December 2 at Skidmore at 6 p.m.
