SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior guard Ben Rudin (Scarsdale, NY) scored 18 points with seven rebounds and senior guard Kyle Dudley (Scarsdale, NY) had 16 points to lead the Middlebury men's basketball team to a 68-52 win at Union Saturday afternoon at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Panthers improved to 7-2 while the Dutchmen now stand 3-3.
Drew Goldstein led Union with 19 points and
Matt Covucci had seven rebounds.
Sophomore forward Ryan Wholey (Pelham, NH) also pulled down seven boards for the Panthers, who had 13 blocked shots on the day. Six of those blocks came from freshman forward Ryan Sharry (Braintree, MA) while four blocks were produced from sophomore forward Jamal Davis (Brooklyn, NY). The Panthers shot 43% and outrebounded the Dutchmen, 41-35. Union shot 31% but made all seven free throw attempts. Goldstein made seven of his 12 shots for the game.
Union had a 10-6 lead after a three pointer by
Steve Madej with 12:05 left in the first, but Middlebury went on a 14-0 run in a span of four minutes and 16 seconds. The largest lead of the half was the 37-16 lead to end the first 20 minutes. Union trailed 49-25 with 11:50 left but had a second half surge and pulled to within 11 with a run of 18-5 in 4:45, featuring two three pointers by Goldstein. But the Panthers later bumped the lead up to 19 with 3:21 left at 64-45.
The Dutchmen play at home for the third straight game on Tuesday, December 9, the final game before the new year. Union will host Western New England at 7 p.m.
