SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College women's basketball team, which opened the season with five straight home games, is a perfect 5-0 after a 60-56 triumph over Middlebury College Saturday at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Dutchwomen got 15 points from
Lauren McCormick and 14 from
Michelle Rogers, while
maria Tobin added 10 points. Middlebury fell to 4-4. This is Union's best start since 2002-03, when the Dutchwomen won their first 15 games of the season.
Freshman gurad Brittany Perfetti (Clifton Heights, PA) had a double double with game hights of 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers, while junior guard Alana Wall (Waterville, VT) added 13 with eig
ht rebounds. Senior guard Ashley Barron (Brockton, MA) pulled down 10 boards, all on the defensive side, for Middlebury. McCormick led the Dutchwomen with seven rebounds.
Union shot 36% but played solid defense by forcing 17 turnovers and contributing to Middlebury's 27% shooting mark from the floor. Union had a 43-28 halftime lead. The game was tied at 13 with 11:27 left in the first half but the Dutchwomen went on a 15-4 run in the next 4:34 for a 28-17 advantage. In the second half, the Panthers opened up with a 22-6 run in the first 7:37 to cut the Union lead down to one at 50-49. But the Panthers could not get closer and Union ended the perfect homestand.
The Dutchwomen will play Tuesday night, December 9, at WPI.
