CLINTON, NY -- Junior forward Drew Desmarais (St. James, NY) scored 19 points and junior gurad Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, NY) added 18 as Union ended the 2007-08 men's basketball season in style with a 72-69 Liberty League win at Hamilton Saturday. The Dutchmen finish the season with a 9-15 mark and a 5-9 league record, while Hamilton is 16-8 and 9-5.
Joey Lokitis (Norton, MA) scored 16 points with four assists and freshman Drew Goldstein (Philadelphia, PA) added 12 points for the Dutchmen. Union got a game high 11 rebounds from senior captain Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY), who played in his final game for the Dutchmen.
Jay Simpson had 15 points and Harlee Wood and Jon Ciriello scored 14 each for the Continentals. Union had a large advantage on the boards, pulling down 37 to the hosts' 25. The Dutchmen shot 43% for the day while the Continentals shot 45%.
Union had a 35-31 lead at the half. The Dutchmen led by as many as 12 at 56-44 with 10:47 left, and had a 10 point advantage at 60-50 with 7:42 remaining. But Hamilton went on a 15-4 run for a 65-64 lead with 3:42 to go. With the Dutchmen down 69-68 with 31 seconds left, Lokitis sank both free throws for a one point lead. He then pulled down a rebound of a Simpson miss with 13 seconds left, then after he was fouled, made both free throws for the three point lead. A Simpson three point attempt with one second left didn't drop, and the Dutchmen ended the season with a road league victory.
Grimm was joined by fellow senior Delon McAllister (Irvington, NJ) in the final games of their careers. McAllister had three rebounds in 12 minutes.
