McAllister free throw in final seconds lifts Dutchmen to 56-55 win over Clarkson

SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior forward Delon McAllister (Irvington, NJ) made a free throw with just under three seconds remaining in regulation to lift Union to a 56-55 men's basketball win over Clarkson at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. Union, now 3-7 in Liberty League play, had back-to-back wins over the top two teams in the league including the win over #1 St. Lawrence Friday. The Dutchmen are now 7-13 overall. The Golden Knights fell to 6-4 in the league, and 8-13 overall.

The teams were knotted at 54-54 with 1:59 left, the fourth tie of the second half, after a layup by Union's Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY). Grimm finished with a season high 16 points. Drew Goldstein (Philadelphia, PA) made the second of two free throw attempts for the visitors, but Brandon Linton (Queens, NY) made the second of his two free throws to tie it at 55-55 with 17 seconds left. A Clarkson foul with just under three seconds left put McAllister on the line, and he also made his second of two for the eventual winning point.

Goldstein (Philadelphia, PA) scored 14 points for the Dutchmen, giving him 55 points in his last three games. Desmarais had a game high 10 rebounds, all on the defensive end. Keith Murray (Queens, NY) led Clarkson with 14 points and seven rebounds along with four assists. Linton had six assists with his nine points.

Clarkson led 27-23 at halftime, featuring a big scoring surge after trailing 13-0 with just under seven minutes into the contest. Clarkson held a six point lead at 31-25 2:07 into the second half, but Union went on a 19-6 run in the next 7:20 for a seven point advantage, 44-37. The Dutchmen had a 46-39 lead with 9:36 left, the largest lead of the second stanza

Union shot 35% to Clarkson's 34% on the night, and the Golden Knights had a slight 33-3 rebounding edge.

Union hosts RPI on Friday, February 15 at 8 p.m., while Clarkson hosts Hamilton Friday at 8 p.m.
