SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior outside hitter Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY) had a team high 15 kills and Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, NY) recorded six blocks with 14 kills to lead Union College to a four game volleyball victory over Williams College Tuesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Dutchwomen, 13-0 and receiving votes in the national AVCA Division III poll, defeated the Ephs for the first time since 1994.
Union won the opener, 25-22, then after losing game two (18-25), pulled out a 34-32 triumph in the third game and took the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth. The last Dutchwomen victory over Williams came on September 23, 1994 on the Union campus, two games to one.
Eve Richards (Schenectady, NY), this week's Liberty League Rookie of the Week, recorded 13 kills while Veronica Mynders (Orchard Park, NY) finished with 35 digs. Bridget Little (Glenville, NY) blocked six with three kills and Jennifer Merinder (Andover, MA), this week's Liberty League Co-Performer of the Week, dished out 48 assists to go along with seven digs and four kills.
In the second game, Union trailed 11-4 at one point but outscored the Ephs, 21-7 in the game. Union fought off four match point opportunties for Williams in the grueling third contest. The Dutchwomen trailed 11-6 in the fourth game against Williams (now 4-5).
Union competes in the Liberty League Preview Tournament at Lake Placid this weekend, with Friday matches against St. Lawrence and Vassar and Saturday contests vs. Clarkson and Skidmore.
