Vassar pulls out 87-80 OT win over Dutchmen

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Although Union outscored Vassar by 10 points in the second half and forced an overtime, the Brewers' men's basketball team outscored the Dutchmen, 15-8 in the extra session en route to an 87-80 OT win in Liberty League play at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Brewers (7-10 overall) won their second league contest in four outings, while the Dutchmen (10-6) fell to 3-3 in the league.

Caleb McGraw (Sitka, AK) scored 26 points and Joey Davis (East Amherst, NY) hit for six of his 22 points in overtime to lead the Brewers. Brian Butterworth (Hamilton, MA) added 14 and Lenny Holt (Watertown, MA) scored 13 with a game best six assists for the guests.

Drew Desmarais, the reigning three-time Liberty League Forward of the Week, made 10 of 15 shots and scored 24 for the Dutchmen, while Matt Covucci had his third double double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Joey Lokitis scored 20 points and added seven rebounds for the Dutchmen.

Union trailed 48-38 at the half, as the Brewers led by as mnay as 19 (41-22 with 4:29 left). Union's only lead of the half was 3-2. Vassar shot 58% in that half. But in the second half, the Dutchmen outscored the Brewers, 34-24. Union trailed by 11 at 56-45 with 13:41 left, but then went on a 19-7 run to trail but just one with 4:16 left. The Dutchmen took their first lead of the half on a three pointer by Lokitis off a steal, making it 70-69 with 1:21 left. But McGraw hit a three with 51 left for a 72-70 Vassar advantage. Covucci forced the extra session with a layup with 32 seconds left in the second half.

In overtime, the made five of seven shots, a 71% clip. The Brewers took a 79-74 lead in the first 3:14 and never led by less then three in the period while holding Union to 38% shooting in the OT (three for eight).

Vassar shot 46% for the game while the Dutchmen shot 44%, and Union had a 37-34 rebounding advantage. 

Union hosts RPI Saturday at 2 p.m. while Vassar travels to Skidmore for a 2 p.m. tip.
