Hobart took over and drove nine plays and 40 yards to the Union 28, but an incomplete pass halted the drive with 5:44 left.
Union then added insurance when Connolly hit Gallo for a 41 yard touchdown pass that broke the school mark and led to the 10 point lead. The Dutchmen faced two different 3rd and 10 situations but both featured 15 yard pass interference calls on the Statesmen to keep the drive alive. The six play, 72 yard drive took 2:22.
With 3:16 left, the Statesmen drove 10 plays and a field goal attempt from 33 yards with 41 seconds left to play was short.
Hobart opened the scoring in the game when Vincent caught an eight yard pass from Vella with 7:40 left in the first quarter. It was the opening drive of the game, consuming 60 yards on 15 plays. After the kickoff, a Union fumble was recovered by Hobart's Kevin Grogan (West Nyack, NY) at the Union 32. But two plays later Hobart fumbled back to Union, as
Chris Gross recovered at the Dutchmen one yard line. After a 23 yard rush by Coney, Connolly hit Gallo with a 76 yard touchdown to tie it at 7-7 with 6:35 left in the quarter.
Union took the lead at 14-7 on a 42 yard rush by Coney on a third and two, with 12:09 remaining in the second quarter. But Hobart came right back on the next drive as the Statesmen marched 11 plays and 56 yards with Marlier rushing in from one out with 7:46 left for the 14-14 score.
Hobart took what would eventually become its final lead of the day with 1:57 left in the third quarter. Marlier ran in from four yards out to conclude a 12 play, 53 yard drive in 4:39 and it was 21-14 Hobart. But back came the Dutchmen right off the kickoff. On the first play, Connolly found Gallo and the two produced a 70 yard score to also produce another tie, 21-21, with just 1:37 left in the first half.
The Union defense not only kept Hobart off the board for the final 31:57, but also produced five sacks while the offensive line did not allow a sack and has allowed just four in five games this season.
Union, the only remaining undefeated team in the Liberty League, plays at St. Lawrence on October 17 at 1 p.m. Hobart is idle next week and returns to league play October 24 at home against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at 12 p.m.
