ONEONTA, NY -- Freshman guard
Shayla Madden scored 17 points in her first game for the Union College women's basketball team, but the Dutchwomen lost their season opener, 70-62 to host Hartwick at Lambros Arena Tuesday night. The Hawks improved to 2-2 on the season.
Madden, Colonie Central High's Most Valuable Player in 2008-09, made six of her 10 shots and hit four of six from three point territory while playing 24 minutes off the bench. Senior
Megan Clark, one of three captains for the Dutchwomen this season, tied her career high with seven rebounds and added 10 points.
Lauren McCormick scored 14 points and also had seven boards for Union.
Mary Donohue had four assists, tied for the game high.
Cassie Dresser led Hartwick with 14 points, one of four Hawks in double figures. Jalicia Connell scored 12 points with eight rebounds while Lauren Ploof and Fritzi Flores had 10 each. Flores tied Union's Donohue with a game high four assists. Heather Pruchansky also had eight rebounds.
Hartwick shot 41% for the game and was 75% from the line. Union shot 37% on the night. Hartwick had a 43-38 rebounding advantage.
The Dutchwomen held the hosts to 25% shooting in the first half (6-24), en route to a 37-25 lead after the first 20 minutes. A three pointer by Madden with 23 seconds left to play in the half provided the 12 point lead, the largest of the half. Union had 17 points off turnovers in the half.
Union led by six at 48-42 with 13:53 left, but the Hawks went on a 14-2 run in the next 4:07 to take a 56-60 lead with 9:46 left. The Dutchwomen got within three, trailing 65-62 after a McCormick layup with 57 seconds left. But Flores hit a three pointer for a six point lead with 32 seconds to play en route to the eight point victory.
Union opens the home season at the Viniar Athletic Center on Sun., November 29. The Dutchwomen will host WPI at 2 p.m.
