SPRINGFIELD, MA -- Emily Sevino and Kailah Al-Darraji scored 16 points each in Western New England's 68-61 non-league women's basketball victory over visiting Union Saturday. The Golden Bears improved to 5-3 while the Dutchwomen fell to 1-5.
Savino and Kelly McCormick pulled down seven rebounds each for the Golden Bears, who shot 39% but held Union to 32% from the floor. McCormick added nine points and Savino had a game high six assists. Western New England had a slight 40-37 rebounding advantage.
Union was led by Lauren McCormick, who scored a game high 24 points. She also had six rebounds and made 12 of 15 attempts from the free throw line while playing all 40 minutes. Megan Clark added 11 points and a game best nine rebounds, and Lindsay Hage scored eight points.
The Dutchwomen had a 34-33 lead at halftime, and led 36-33 with 18:53 left in the second half after two free throws by Lauren McCormick. But the Golden Bears went on a 11-4 run in the next 6:40 for a 44-38 lead with 12:13 left. The hosts led by as many as nine at 61-52 with 1:13 left on two free throws by Caitlin Powers. Union got as close as four on a three pointer by Hage with 34 seconds left but Savino made two free throws after a foul to provide a six point advantage with 32 seconds left.
Union has one more game before the new year, Tuesday, December 15 at Utica at 6 p.m.
