Union loses finale to Hamilton, 56-47

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Patrick Sullivan (Madison, NJ) scored 11 points with seven rebounds and Harlee Wood (Clinton, MD) added 10 points with eight rebounds for Hamilton in a 56-47 men's basketball win at Union's Viniar Athletic Center Saturday. The Continentals are 18-6 overall and 12-2 in the league and will be the #2 seed in next week's Liberty League tournament at St. Lawrence. Union, which was eliminated when Hobart lost at Skidmore, finishes the season 13-11 and 6-8 in the league.

It was Senior Day at Union and Nick Ciresi, Drew Desmarais, Steve Madej and Zdenek Papez were honored prior to the contest.

Ephraim McDowell (Boston, MA) scored 10 points for the Continentals, who shot 41% but kept Union to a 29% shooting mark for the game and 15% from three point territory. Hamilton outrebounded the Dutchmen, 39-31, and led 32-28 at the half.

Union's Joey Lokitis led all scorers with 18 points and also had a game high nine rebounds. Desmarais finished with 10 points for the game and Ciresi added seven. Madej, who had four points, finished his Union career with 991 career points and Desmarais wrapped up with 983 points for his Union career.

The Dutchmen took the lead, 33-32, 2:43 into the second half on a three pointer by Lokitis. But it was the last home lead for the game, and Sullivan made two free throws to give the guests the leaed at 34-33 with 16:50 left. A jumper by McDowell with 12:33 remaining gave the guests a seven point advantage, 42-35, and they also led by seven at 44-37 with 9:59 left. Union pulled to with two three more times, last coming on a Lokitis layup to make it 49-47 with 2:53 remaining. But that turned out to be the final points of the day for Union, as Hamilton converted five free throws along with a layup in the final minutes.
