Geneseo Bests Union 16-8 In Men’s Lacrosse

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, NY –
A fast start sparked Geneseo (5-1), which claimed a 16-8 men's lacrosse victory against Union College (3-2) on Sunday at Frank Bailey Field. Despite the losing effort, junior Andrew Higgins registered a season-high three goals, while freshman Ted McKenna netted two tallies.

The Blue Knights opened with six unanswered goals from six different players during the first eight minutes of the opening quarter. McKenna, Higgins and junior Scott Garibaldi answered with three straight, cutting Geneseo's lead in half.

McKenna got Union on the board at 5:06 of the first thanks to a pass from Garibaldi and Higgins found the back of the net with 40 ticks remaining in the first on a play setup by sophomore Derek Witheford. The Dutchmen carried the momentum into the second quarter and Garibaildi struck 1:50 into the period.

However, the Knights scored three of four before the half and carried a 9-4 lead into the break.

After McKenna and Geneseo senior Jim Fiacco exchanged goals in the third, Union pulled within four at the 12:03 mark of the fourth with Higgins' third goal of the game. Freshman Ethan Meyer had the helper – his third of the contest.

Geneseo finished as strongly as it started scoring three straight to produce the final result.

Garibaldi and Meyer joined Higgins and McKenna with multi-point efforts.

Senior Kevin Rautenstrauch collected a team-high seven groundballs and won eight face-offs.

Freshman Sean Aaron was one of three netminders for the Dutchmen. He logged just over 50 minutes of action, making 12 saves.

Geneseo outshot Union 40-33, including a 28-18 in shots on goal. The Knights also held the advantage in groundballs, 55-46, and face-offs (16-12).

With the extra-man, Union went 1-for-3, while Geneseo was 3-for-6.

Union returns to the field on Tuesday, Mar. 31 for a 4 p.m. contest at SUNY Cobleskill.
