SCHENECTADY, NY – The two headed attack of freshmen Nick Alfonzetti and Ethan Meyer powered the Union College men's lacrosse team to an 8-6 victory against Hamilton on Wednesday at Frank Bailey Field. The rookie duo each netted a pair of goals, improving the Dutchmen's record to 5-3 and 1-1 in the Liberty League. Hamilton was led by two goals from Henry Burchenal and now goes to 3-6 and 1-2 in the league.

 

Also contributing to the Dutchmen's offensive efforts were juniors Charles Hovsepian and Scott Garibaldi, sophomore Brendan Kinnane and freshman Ted McKenna.

 

Senior goaltender Christopher Keinath turned away six shots for his fifth win of the year, while Hamilton's Max Vaickus made 13 stops.

 

Union outshot Hamilton, 41-25, and held a 60-39 advantage in groundballs. Behind the face-off abilities of senior Kevin Rautenstrauch and sophomore Derek Mayer, the Dutchmen won 11-of-17 face-offs.

 

Alfonzetti got things started for Union at the 6:35 mark of the first, which sparked a three-goal run for Union. Meyer netted his first goal of the game at 3:48 and McKenna found the back of the net with just 10 ticks remaining in the first.

 

After Hamilton's Henry Burchenal got his team on the board, Union followed with three more goals. Kinnane had the last goal of the half at 7:24 and Alfonzetti (13:43) and Garibaldi (11:41) scored early in the third.

 

The visitors found their stride midway of the third, netting three straight goals and bringing the score to 6-4. Hovesepian's third goal of the season gave Union some breathing room, but Andy Simon scored for Hamilton at 13:56 of the fourth.

 

Meyer's sixth goal of the season at 7:30 appeared to be the insurance marker Union was looking for, but after Union's lead was cut down to two, Keinath came up big with a save on Hamilton's final possession.

 

The Dutchmen hit the road for four straight games, beginning with a 1 p.m. contest at Skidmore on Saturday, Apr. 11.
