WORCESTER, MA --- Allie Griffin (Billerica, MA) registered 11 saves and Sasha Marokhovsky (Upton, MA) collected the only goal of the game to help lift WPI to a hard-earned 1-0 win over visiting Union in a non-conference field hockey contest on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Engineers improve their record to 3-1 while Dutchwomen slip to 1-2 on young season.
The hosts struck early as Marokhovsky took a feed from Meghan Linskey (Bridgewater, MA) during a wild scramble in front of the Union goal and deposited it into the back of the net at the 11:20 mark. It was the sophomore's first goal of the season and eighth career marker.
After that it was the Crimson and Gray defense that took over. Griffin was called on to make several key stops and was aided by defensive saves by Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) and Meganne Chiasson (North Andover, MA) late in the contest.
For the game, Union held a 16-5 advantage in shots, including all nine taken in the second half. #Sarah Rios# recorded a pair of saves in goal for the Dutchwomen.
Union is back in action Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Utica.
