SCHENECTADY, NY – The Dutchmen's hopes of its best start since 1985 was halted when they lost to SUNY Geneseo, 1-0, in a men's soccer match Wednesday. Union was attempting to win its first four games, but now go to 3-1-0. Geneseo improves to 3-2-1.

 

The Blue Knights struck early when Colin Begy sent a left-footed shot in to the low-left third after a throw in bounced around the box. The goal, Begy's first of the season, was assisted by Yuta Shimizu.

 

After falling behind early, the Dutchmen seemed to dictate the play the rest of the way and freshman forward Sahr Nyuma had two opportunities late in the first. The first came from within six yards when he sent a shot over the net. The second was denied from a wide-open net by a Blue Knight defender.

 

Junior midfielder Dan Dubrow) awed the home crowd late in the first when he rainbowed the ball while speeding past a defender.

 

In the second half, Liberty League all-conference and senior Brendan Steiner and the rest of the backline kept the visitors away from Union's net, allowing the offense to keep the pressure in the Geneseo end.

 

Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Margulies made three saves, while Geneseo's Sam Murphy made one save, while cutting off the majority of Union's through-balls in the box.

 

The Dutchmen return to action on Saturday at Utica for a 7 p.m. start.
