SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union women's soccer team lost a close fought overtime battle, 1-0, to Rochester on Sunday afternoon at College Park. Rochester's Erin Carballo scored at 95:05 after a defensive mishap led to her second goal of the year. Union is now 3-3-0, while Rochester improves to 4-1-2.
Union was outshot, 11-9, for the game and junior goalkeeper
Abby Stohler had two, while Rochester's Celeste Hornbach finished the game with five saves. The Dutchmen defense contributed, making two team saves.
The Yellow Jackets had their chances early. Carballo fired one off the post from 16 yards out 15 minutes into the game. Moments later, sophomore forward Erin Coleman had a chance denied on the goal line by senior midfielder
Allie Cuozzo.
Near the end of the first, the Dutchwomen came on with several opportunities. A corner led to junior midfielder
Caitlin O'Donnell sending a header just high with just under 15 minutes in the first. Junior forward
Katie McLean's individual effort led to a fast break and a scoring chance, which was denied by Hornbach.
McLean nearly broke the scoreless game when she was denied by a diving Hornbach with just 13 minutes remaining. McLean's aim was for the lower right corner, but the outstretched arm of the Rochester keeper deflected the attempt wide.
Union returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 25 with a 4 p.m. contest at Clarkson.
