SCHENECTADY, NY – In his second game back from injury sophomore forward Craig Santangelo scored the game-winning goal at 56:34 to help lift the Union College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against defending Liberty League champions St. Lawrence. The victory propels Union to a 2-0-0 record in conference play and 5-2-0 overall. St. Lawrence goes to 1-1 in Liberty League action and 6-2-0 for the season.
Freshman forward Sabastiaan Jensen setup Santangelo's goal when he fired a shot off the chest of St. Lawrence goalkeeper Brian Abernethy (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Catholic), allowing Santangelo to cash in on the rebound from the right door step. The goal was his first of the season and sixth of his career.
The Saints fell a man down 3:55 into the game when starting goalkeeper Nate Goss-Woliner (Waitsfield, VT/Kimball Union Academy) received a red card for taking Jensen down on a breakaway. The play resulted on a penalty kick, which went in St. Lawrence's favor with the try struck the left goal post.
Union outshot St. Lawrence 15-6 for the game, but the Saints played with urgency for the last 25 minutes and had their best opportunity of the game with less than 10 seconds remaining. A deep throw in from Union's defensive end sailed through the box, off the head of sophomore Dan Marvin (Bow, NH/Holderness School) and just left of the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Margulies made three saves for his fifth win of the year and second shutout, while Abernethy made seven stops, including five in the opening half.
Union returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 29 with a 4:30 p.m. contest at SUNY Cobleskill.
