Salisbury wins non-league football game at Union, 52-21

Sophomore quarterback Dan Griffin had 333 yards in total offense with five touchdowns and junior running back Randal Smedley rushed for 210 yards and a touchdown to lead Salisbury University to a 52-21 win at Union College in a non-league football game at Frank Bailey Field Saturday.

The Sea Gulls improved to 6-1 on the season while the Dutchmen fell to 2-4.

Griffin passed for two scores and ran for three others, and had 196 yards rushing on 16 carries. Smedley had a 71 yard touchdown run and Salisbury had 640 yards in total offense. Ricky Cassidy made nine tackles and James Piersanti and Justin Chura had eight each. 

Union junior quarterback Drew Connolly was 23 for 43 with two touchdowns and 315 yards. Senior wide receiver Justin Gallo had 143 yards on 13 catches, while Union posted 312 yards on total offense. Senior Andrew Trochanowski had a game best 11 tackles with a forced fumble, a forced fumble and a tackle for a loss.

Griffin opened the scoring with a 54 yard touchdown run 6:27 into the first quarter, It was the lone play of the drive that also featured a penalty, as the drive was 49 yards in 12 seconds. Tyler Curley made it 14-0 when he caught a 45 yard strike from Griffin with 1:35 left in the quarter. The drive featured 64 yards on five plays in 2:27.

The lone scoring of the second quarter came when Connolly ran in from two yards out to make it 14-7 with just 1:08 remaining in the second half. The scoring drive took 57 yards on six plays in 1:46.

After holding Union on four downs to open the third quarter, Salisbury took over at the visitor 29 yard line, and Smedley ran free for 71 yards for a 21-7 lead just 1:18 into the quarter. Unon came back on the very next drive and got back to within seven when Connolly found Jimmer Bennett for an 18 yard passing score with 10:50 left in the third. It was a 68 yard, six play drive that consumed 2:56. But the Sea Gulls opened it up before the end of the quarter. Griffin tossed to Alex Boseman for a season best 92 yard passing touchdown and a 28-14 lead with 5:54 remaining in the quarter. After an interception, the Sea Gulls took over at the Union 49 and on the second play, Griffin rushed for 47 yards for a 35-14 lead with 4:19 left in the period.

Griffin had a 52 yard run for a score with 9:34 on the fourth quarter clock for a 42-14 lead, with a four play, 61 yard drive in 1:43. A.J. Rosenthal added a field goal with 5:04 left, a 43 yarder, for a 45-21 lead, and Joey Jones rushed for a 42 yard score with 2:13 left and help to provide the 52-21 final.

Union plays at RPI next week in the 108th meeting between the two schools. Game time is 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 30. The game will feature the 61st with The Dutchman Shoes Trophy on the line. Salisbury hosts Wesley October 30 at 1 p.m.
