UTICA, N.Y. – Junior forward
Jessica Strang scored twice to lead the women's soccer team to a 4-0 win against non conference foe Utica on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Union outshot Utica 11-3 on the day on the Dutchwomen closed out their regular season schedule. The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday in their season-finale as they host St. John Fisher College in an Empire 8 Conference contest at 1 p.m.
Union improved to 13-4 overall on the year while the Pioneers dropped their fourth straight game and fell to 2-10-2 overall.
Strang opened the scoring on the day with her sixth goal of the season after receiving a through ball from freshman
Melissa Mansfield in the fifth minute of the contest to put the Dutchwomen up 1-0. Over 22 minutes later Mansfield added her seventh goal of the season when she beat Utica freshman goalie Jocelyn Rivera to put Union on top 2-0.
The second half was much of the same, with Union applying most of the pressure. Freshman defender
Caroline Gorka registered her first collegiate goal midway through the half off a free kick from 30 yards out. Gorka's goal sailed over the head of UC's Rivera, bounced once, and found the back of the net to give Union a 3-0 lead at 63:18.
Just over seven minutes later Strang added her second goal of the night to close out the scoring with the Dutchwomen up by four goals.
Rivera made four saves in net for Utica while
Abby Stohler and
Mia Simone each stopped one shot for Union.
