SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior guard Justin Gallo scored 22 points in his second career game and senior forward
Matt Covucci had a double double with 13 points and 12 rebounds in leading Union College to a 78-61 non-league basketball win over SUNYIT Wednesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.
The Dutchmen improved to 2-0 on the young season while the Wildcats fell to 0-4.
Keven Donohue scored 17 points and
Drew Goldstein added 15 for the Dutchmen. Covucci recorded five steals and Goldstein dished out four assists as Union used a big second half en route to the victory. Union had a 28-26 lead at halftime but shot 58% in the second half while scoring 50 points in the last 20 minutes. Union had a 41-36 rebounding edge.
Senior Calvin Logins led the Wildcats with 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Julian Bostick scored 12 points and Kevin Cappiello added nine.
Cappiello made a free throw to tie the game at 32-32 with 17:37 left in the second half. But the Dutchmen went on a 16-4 run in the next 5:32. Union was up 48-36 with 12:05 left. The Wildcats got as close as nine twice but the Dutchmen pulled away later and led by as many as 19 (76-57 with 2:32 left).
Union shot 45% for the game and held SUNYIT to 39% shooting while also forcing 17 turnovers.
Union continues the three game homestand to open the season, as the Dutchmen host Middlebury Saturday, December 4 at 2 p.m.
