SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior forward Lauren McCormick scored a team high 14 points and senior gaurd Leah Pepe and freshman forward Brittney Kenney scored 11 each to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 63-50 home victory over Utica College at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night.
The Dutchwomen irmpoved to 3-3 after the non-league win while the Pioneers fell to 4-6.
Freshman Marissa Ray added nine points and senior Lauren Hennessey led the Dutchwomen with six rebounds. Union forced 19 turnovers and held the Pioneers to 38% shooting.
Utica was led by senior forward Jessica Berry, who had a double double with game highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds. She also had five assists while playing all 40 minutes. Meghan Fiore scored 19 with seven boards and Katie McGee had a game best six assists with eight points and six boards. The Pioneers had a slight rebouding edge, 36-33.
Union had a 27-19 lead at the half. With the Dutchwomen up by nine at 32-23 with 15:26 left in the second half, the Pioneers went on a 11-3 run in the next 4:15 to pull to within one at 35-34 with 13:11 left. Fiore had seven of the 11 points during that run. But from that point, Union went on a run of 15-4 run in a span of 5:38 for a 50-38 lead. Pepe scored five in that run. Utica got no closer then nine the rest of the way and Union's largest lead was 16 at 63-47 with 49 seconds remaing.
The Dutchwomen return to action on December 29 at the Trinity Tournament in Texas, facing East Texas Baptist. Utica is idle until January 7 when the Pioneers host St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 game.
