Dutchwomen lose home opener to Middlebury, 65-57

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Middlebury improved to 6-0 for the first time since 2001-02 as the Panthers won at the Viniar Athletic Center, 65-57 at Union. The Panthers shot .520 from the floor in the second half and outscored the Dutchwomen 21-4 from the free throw line in the game. The Middlebury defense forced 32 turnovers in the game. Union fell to 1-2 on the young season.

Leah Pepe led Union with 19 points, Shayla Madden netted 13, and Lauren McCormick scored 10. Union shot 45% for the contest and also forced 24 turnovers. Pepe made eight of her 12 shots from the floor in 31 minutes of play. Lauren Hennessey led all players with her game high 11 rebounds. It was a new career high for the senior forward.

Middlebury led by five early, before Union outscored Middlebury 17-5 over the next 10 minutes to take a 25-16 lead with 3:39 left in the half. The Panthers trailed by as many as nine in the second half before going on a 9-0 run at the 16:05 mark to tie the game at 37-37. Union briefly regained the lead before Middlebury's Brittany Perfetti scored at the 11:46 mark to put the Panthers on top for good.

The game remained tight until the final few minutes, when a three-point play from Lauren Sanchez gave the Panthers a seven-point lead with 2:58 remaining. Middlebury made seven of 10 free throws down the stretch to secure the 65-57 win.

Maddie Moreau led the Panthers with 20 points, tying her career high. Tracy Borsinger scored a career-best 15 in the win, while Sanchez added 13 points, six steals and four assists.

Union returns to action on Thursday, December 9 at Bridgewater State, and is back home on Saturday, December 11 to host Western New England at 1 p.m.
