24 points from Lokitis lifts Union to 58-40 win at Hamilton

Senior tri-captain Joey Lokitis scored 24 points and Matt Covucci tied his career high with 14 rebounds as Union defeated Hamilton, 58-40 at the Scott Field House Saturday. The Dutchmen are one game out of first place with a 6-4 Liberty League record, while the Continentals fell to 4-5 in the league. Union is now 10-10 on the season while Hamilton is 8-11 overall.

Lokitis, who made 10 of 18 shots from the floor, had seven rebounds, and Keven Donohue scored 16 points with eight rebounds. The Dutchmen dominated the glass with a 41-29 rebounding advantage. Union also had just nine turnovers, a season best mark, and the Dutchmen held Hamilton to 24% shooting, also a season best defensive performance. The Dutchmen shot 45% for the day.

Hamilton did not have any player score in double figures. Pat Sullivan led the way with eight points, making all four of his free throws, while Jay Simpson had six points. No Hamilton player had five or more rebounds.

Union trailed 11-5 with 11:13 remaining in the first half. But the Dutchmen, although never taking the lead in the first half, kept it close and trailed 28-24 at halftime. Union tied it at 28-28 2:49 into the second half on a jumper by Joseph Mason, then went on a 14-7 run when Donohue made a three pointer with 9:54 left to play. Union added to the lead throughout the final nine minutes and the 18 point margin was the largest of the day. 

The Dutchmen return to the Viniar Athletic Center next weekend. Union hosts Vassar Friday night at 8 p.m. and RPI Saturday at 4 p.m. Saturday features "NCAA Take a Kid to the Game Day," as children can meet the Dutchmen and receive post game autographs. The game, like all regular season contests, features free admission for all.
