TROY, NY -- Bryant Johnson scored four goals to lead RPI to a 12-7 victory over Union Saturday night.
With the win, #15 RPI clinches the Liberty League regular season championship with a 6-0 record, and is 12-2 overall. The Engineers will host St. Lawrence Friday in a Liberty League semifinal game. The Dutchmen (4-2 in the league, 11-3 overall) finish as the #2 seed in the upcoming league tourney and will host Skidmore on Friday. Game times are to be announced.
Peter Griesinger scored three goals and Ted McKenna tallied two for the Dutchmen, while Union got single goals by Ethan Meyer and Joe Cordrey.
RPI had a 46-24 shot advantage while Union had 23 grounds balls to the host team's 19. Both teams had 17 turnovers and RPI won 12 of the 22 faceoffs. Union's Sean Aaron stopped 11 and James Manchester of RPI made 13 saves.
Wes Rudy opened the scoring for the hosts with an unasisted tally with 7:06 left in the first half, and after Paul Cerone fed Nick Billy with 3:49 left in the period, RPI had a 2-0 advantage. But Peter Griesinger put Union on the board with 3:10 remaining. Bryant Johnson scored with just 57 seconds left for a 3-1 RPI lead to close out the first period scoring.
It remained 4-1 until very late in the second period. Cerone passed out front to Eric Valero, who let go a quick release just in time, with two seconds remaining in the first period, for a 4-1 lead for the half.
Griesinger pulled Union to within two just two minutes into the third and after a Devin Arnold RPI goal made it 5-2, Ted McKenna and Joe Cordrey scored in a 58 second span and Union was down 5-4 with 6:53 left in the third period. But RPI scored four straight, including three on man up situations, and had a 9-4 lead with 1:57 left. McKenna made it 9-5 with the final goal of the third with 54 seconds left in the period.
When Meyer tallied 2:05 into the fourth, it was 9-6. But the Engineers got two goals by Johnson and another by Arnold for a 12-6 lead with 5:22 remaining. Griesinger notched his third of the night and the final goal of the game with 2:58 left to provide the 12-7 final.
