Baseball drops a pair of games to Vassar on Senior Day

Game 1: Union 9, Vassar 14   |   Game 2: Union 2, Vassar 8

SCHENECTADY, NY – Union College and the Athletic Department honored the five Union baseball student-athletes between games one and two of Sunday's season-ending doubleheader against Vassar, which the Brewers swept, 14-9 and 8-2. Seniors Andy Brown, Andrew Catellier, John Johnson, Colin McKelligan and Paul Mene each put the finishing touches on their collegiate careers.

The pair of losses moves the Dutchmen's record to 12-30 overall and 4-20 in the conference, while the Brewers improve to 10-27 and 5-19 in the Liberty League.

During game one, McKelligan led Union with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, including a triple and two RPIs. Brown also had a multiple-RBI affair, driving in two runs. Freshman Matt Barretto was 2-for-4 in the outing with an RBI and freshman Ben Price went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Vassar was led by freshman Mike Perrone, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and sophomore Scott Allen went 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Senior Ari Glantz joined Allen with three RBIs. Glantz went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run.

The Brewers did the majority of their work in the first inning, scoring seven runs thanks to RBIs from junior Devon Luongo, junior Joe Castilla and a pair from Allen.

After falling behind 11-1 in the top of the fourth, Union unloaded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Brown was responsible for two of the runs, while Barretto and Price accounted for two. McKelligan finished the scoring in the inning with a triple to left-center field.

John MacGregor earned the victory, throwing a complete game and striking out one while allowing four earned runs.

During game two, junior Peter Mugford and freshman Dom Calistro led the Dutchmen at the plate. Mugford was 2-for-4 with a RBI, while Calistro went 2-for-3 also with an RBI.

Perrone registered another three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Sal Costanzo led all batters with two RBI, going 1-for-4.

The visitors again jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the first two innings. An RBI single by Castilla and an RBI double by junior David Ringold in the seventh secured the victory and put Vassar up 8-2.

Sophomore Dennis Tario was the winning pitcher, striking out four in nine innings of work. Brown threw for Union and whiffed three batters in just over six innings.
