Geneseo hands men's soccer first loss of season

-The Geneseo men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the initial 25 minutes of the game and held on for a 3-1 win over visiting Union College (4-1-1) this afternoon.

Junior Colin Begy scored the opener from 15 yards out after a pass up the left side by senior Yuta Shimizu at 12:01 after the Blue Knights missed a penalty kick high at the 7:45 mark. Geneseo made it 2-0 at 24:35 when John Piaggione crossed in front to junior Ian Mort (McQuaid), who scored his fourth goal of the season on a header into the right corner.

In the second half, the Dutchmen controlled play despite being down a player due to a red card late in the first half. Union drew within 2-1 when Craig Santangelo collected a loose ball in the scoring area and shot low left corner. The Blue Knights reclaimed the two-goal lead when Mort fed a corner kick to the left side and senior Andy Marzo finished with a header into the upper right corner at 87:09.

Senior Mike Madarasz  made one save to post the win in nets for the Blue Knights. Union falls to 4-1-1 on the season and will return to action on Friday at 4 p.m. when they travel to Hamilton College. Geneseo moves to 3-2-1 on the season and travels to Potsdam on Friday.
