CLINTON, N.Y. -- The Union College Dutchwomen defeated host Hamilton 71-65 after battling in two overtimes in a Liberty League women's basketball game at Scott Field House on Friday night.
Hamilton (5-4 overall, 0-2 Liberty League) led 65-60 at 2:48 in the second overtime until Union (7-3, 2-0) pulled away with an 11 point lead.
Leah Pepe made a 3-pointer, along with a layup by
Brittney Kenney to tie the game 65-65 at 1:32. A jumper by Kenney put Union in the lead with 46 seconds left. Three free throws added to Union's 11 points lead in the final 30 seconds.
The Dutchwomen led for most of the first half. Hamilton led the last eight minutes, ending the half up 27-26. Hamilton and Union were tied five different times in the second half. The Dutchwomen led by three points with 15 seconds left before the Continentals' Kim Goidell beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer to tie the game 54-54.
In the first overtime, the Dutchwomen led 57-54 after making three free-throws. The Continentals came back from the deficit, pulling ahead with a jumper by Blue Sanders and a 3-pointer by Dani Feigin at 1:22. Union quickly pulled ahead with a 3-pointer by Pepe at 1:07. With 42 seconds left, Maddie Harlem made a free throw to tie the game 60-60.
Lauren McCormick led Union with a game-high 24 points and 14 rebounds. McCormick went 14-for-20 on the line. Pepe made five 3-pointers, finishing with 22 points.
Sanders led Hamilton with 18 points and four assists. Harlem added 15 points and was 7-9 at the line. Eliza Howe made two 3-pointers, chipping in 12 points and was credited with 10 rebounds
The Dutchwomen held a 55-42 advantage in rebounds. The Continentals were 5-17 from the 3-point range, while the Dutchwomen made 7-23.
Union returns to the court tomorrow afternoon when they travel to play William Smith at 2 pm
