POTSDAM, NY -- Felix Llanos led all players with 25 points and Rey Jefferson scored 16 with six rebounds to lead Clarkson University to a 70-65 men's basketball win over visiting Union College at
Alumni Gymnasium Saturday. The Golden Knights now stand 9-6 for the season and 1-3 in the Liberty League. The Dutchmen fell to 8-8 and are 0-5 in the league.
Llanos had seven rebounds and made seven of 10 three point attempts. Jefferson was seven for nine at the line and had three assists and Jonathan Hood blocked five shots with eight rebounds for the Golden Kngihts. Clarkson shot 42% from the floor.
Union outrebounded the host school, 37-30, and 46% for the contest.
Keven Donohue had his second double double of the season with a season best 19 points along with 10 rebounds.
Rusmir Dzanko had a season high 14 points and
Drew Goldstein scored 11 with four assists and four steals.
Matt Petrone also dished out four assists.
The Dutchmen led at halftime, 29-26, and a layup by Donohue 44 seconds into the second half gave Union a five pont lead at 31-26. But Clarkson tied it went on a 6-0 run to trail 36-35 with 17:09 left. Union right back with an 11-5 run for a seven point advantage, 47-40 with 14:26 to play on a Covucci layup. Clarkson led 50-49 with 12:02 left on Charlton's jumper, then the game remained tight throughout the next six minutes. With the game tied at 59-59 with 6:38 left, Clarkson went on a 7-0 run in the next 3:44 for a 68-61 lead feuled by five points by Llanos. Union got to within three with 1:14 left at 68-65 with a layup by Dzanko. But Jefferson made two free throws with eight seconds left to seal the win.
Union returns home to the Viniar Athletic Center next weekend for a pair of Liberty League games. The Dutchmen host RPI Friday night at 8 p.m. and Vassar Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
