Vassar joins Union on top of Liberty League with 59-53 win

Junior guard Brittany Parks scored 25 points and freshman guard Cydni Matsuoka tallied 18 with a team high seven rebounds to lead Vassar College to a 59-53 women's basketball win over Union College Saturday at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Brewers now are tied on top of the Liberty League with Union at 5-2, while improving to 11-7 overall. The Dutchwomen lost for just the second time in 11 games and fell to 10-5.

Parks added six rebounds, five assists and four steals while Matsuoka made it 43 points in two games including the 25 in Friday's win at Skidmore. She dished out four assists and each played 39 minutes for Vassar, which shot 43% for the day.

Union was led by senior Lauren McCormick, who posted her fourth straight double double. It was her sixth double double of the season. She had 11 points with a game high 12 rebounds. Freshman Marissa Ray tallied a career best 15 points and Leah Pepe had four assists for Union, which shot 35% but had a 37 to 33 rebounding edge.

Vassar had a 32-22 halftime lead, and had a solid start that featured a 12 point lead with 6:47 left in the first half. The Brewers shot 50% in the half and already had 16 points from Parks.

Union got to within five in the second half, trailing 40-35 wtih 13:55 left on a jumper by Brittney Kenney. But Vassar went on a run of 16-9 in the next 8:04 feuled by two three pointers by Matsuoka. A McCormick layup with 58 seconds left pulled Union to within six at 59-53 but that proved to be the final scoring.

The Dutchwomen are home again on Tuesday, February 1 to host Skidmore at 6 p.m. Vassar is back in action Friday, February 4 at St. Lawrence at 6 p.m.
