GENEVA, NY -- Senior Kirsten Hamilton's two goals lead the 18th-ranked William Smith field hockey team passed Union College 3-0 in Liberty League action at McCooey Field this afternoon.
Hamilton opened the scoring for the Herons (9-2, 2-1) when Annie Kietzman earned a penalty corner in the tenth minute. Kietzman's insertion went to stopper Amy David who set up the blast from the left wing beating the Dutchwomen's keeper.
Eight minutes later Hamilton found the back of the net again off a centering pass from Taylor Cappello. Cappello running up the right wing sent a centering pass which Hamilton slammed past Union keeper Mary McCune. William Smith added a third goal with just nine seconds left in the half when Melanie O'Connor put a rebound home into the back of the net.
Sara Helmer helped keep the shutout alive in the 27th minute when she made a defensive save.
The Dutchwomen's (0-8, 0-3) best opportunity of the afternoon game just four minutes into the game when
Nicole Merigliano found herself open and beat Heron Goaltender Taryn Little only to have her shot bounce off the left post.
Natalie Engel kept Union in the game both early and late recording two defensive saves.
Goalies Taryn Little and Catherine Hare combined for the shutout without making a save. Union goalies Mary McCune and
Corey Hedges combined to make 11 stops while shutting out the Herons in the second half. Herons held the advantage in both (27-3) and penalty corners (19-3).
Union is right back in action Sunday at Utica at 1 p.m.
