Soccer Dutchmen score early and often in 3-0 win at Clarkson

Box Score

POTSDAM, NY --
A pair of goals in the opening minutes, including one that came just 14 seconds after the clock started, lifted 18th-ranked Union College to a 3-0 Liberty League victory over the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-9-1 overall on the season and moved to 2-4-0 in the Liberty League standings. Union College, ranked 18th in the country, got a much needed win in the conference standings and improved to 2-2-1 in league games and 11-2-1 overall.

Fans were still fitting their hats back on their heads after the national anthem when Union picked up its first goal of the game, tallying a score just 14 seconds into the contest. Following the kick off, Union moved the ball into the corner where junior Sebastiaan Jansen had just one man to beat. He settled for kicking a soft cross into the penalty area, but Clarkson goalkeeper Saverino Spagnolo sprawled out to stop the ball. The ball skipped out of his gloved hands and right to the foot of sophomore Jake Soodek, who deposited a shot into the upper portion of the empty net for a very quick goal. It was Soodek's first goal of the season. Union wasn't done, scoring another goal just three minutes later. Jansen scored his team-best 10th goal of the year off a header at the 3:34 mark, with junior Chris Choquette assisting.

The Dutchmen's fast start was stopped from that point on in the opening period, but Union picked up an insurance goal in the opening minutes of the second half. Once again Jansen led the Dutchmen offense, this time scoring his 11th goal of the year on a shot into the lower right corner in the 51st minute. Senior Marc Zeyak earned his third assist of the year on the Dutchmen's third score of the game.

Union goalkeeper Mike Szczesniak was called upon to make four saves for the Dutchmen, while Spagnolo and Scott Stuart combined to make two stops. Union out shot Clarkson 8-5, while the Golden Knights had a 3-0 edge in corner kick chances.

The Dutchmen have three games remaining in the regular season, and all are home at College Park. Union hosts Hobart Saturday, October 22 at 2 p.m.
