Dutchmen Soccer tops Utica 1-0

BOX SCORE

SCHENECTADY, NY
- With 16 minutes remaining in the game, junior Nick Vozzella buried an unassisted shot to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 win over Utica College Saturday night.  With the majority of the match remaining scoreless, one goal was all it took to place Union at 9-1 on the season.  Union now has a 0.900 win percentage.

The winning goal was initially set up off of a corner kick, taken by senior Tom Albano.  Vozzella managed to find the perfect opportunity out of a scramble in front of Utica goalkeeper Anthony Caruso.  In the midst of chaos, the forward responded quickly, kicking the ball out of mid air to take the lead for the Dutchmen.

The match was evenly paced with multiple offensive opportunities coming to each team.  Caruso faced four shots during his 90 minutes in net, including a blast from senior Marc Zeyak that brought the goaltender to his knees.  Zeyak had two shots on goal during the match and worked with Vozzella throughout the game to create several chances for the Dutchmen.

Senior goalkeepers Adam Margulies and Mike Szczesniak split the win for the squad, each making one save.  Utica midfielder Kevin McAllister had one of the best scoring opportunities for the Pioneers, charging the net with minutes to go in the half.  Freshman Kevin Janson was there, however, with a diving kick to throw McAllister off his path and force the shot wide.

Senior Craig Santangelo and junior Sebastiaan Jansen both had multiple close chances to extend the Dutchmen's lead, adding to the excitement of the back and forth nature of the game.  Junior Alex Pack had an excellent defensive game, and managed to create an offensive opportunity with a shot on goal. Another highlight of the match was freshman Will Poetzsch, who added momentum in the first half with a sliding kick in front of Szczesniak to regain possession for Union.

The Dutchmen, who outshot Utica 13-6, are back in action on Wednesday, October 5th, at 7:00 p.m.  The squad travels to Troy, New York to take on rival RPI for their second conference game of the season.
