No. 23 Union women's soccer improves to 10-1 with 4-0 win over Utica

SCHENECTADY, NY
–  Sophomore midfielder Laura Snowden had a goal and an assist to lead the Union College women's soccer team in a 4-0 win over Utica (3-7) at College Park. The Dutchwomen (10-1, 1-1 Liberty League) used three second half goals to pull away from the Pioneers and outshot Utica 22-5 for the contest, including 12 shots on goal.
                                                
No. 23 Union took an early lead in the first half when junior midfielder Giovanna Velardo scored her second goal in as many games, converting a rebound at the 9:17 mark.
 
Snowden recorded her first assist of the season, setting up the goal with an initial shot off the inside of the far post. The ball sat just outside the goal line, and Velardo tapped it in for her second goal of the season.
 
Union held a 9-2 advantage in shots in the half, and did not allow a Utica shot on goal until the 42:58 mark of the first half.
 
Snowden scored her second goal of the season at 62:19 of the second half following a rebound off an initial shot from freshman forward Mollie Gilchrist that deflected of the post.
 
Just over two minutes later, junior forward Jennifer Mansfield scored her third goal of the season on a free kick from 30 yards out, beating Utica goalkeeper Samantha Glockling high for a 3-0 Union lead at 64:55.
 
Freshman defender Julia Shively would score her first collegiate goal at 73:34 with a long shot to round out the scoring for the Dutchwomen.
 
Utica forward Chelsea Way led the Pioneers with two shots on the afternoon, while Union was led by Mansfield and Gilchrist, who each had five shots.
 
Glockling made eight saves in net for Utica, while Union goalkeeper Mia Simone stopped two shots in 65 minutes. Kayla Marti and Allison Brustowicz also saw action in net for the Dutchwomen, as Marti stopped one shot.
 
Union will host Hartwick at College Park on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m. in their next contest.
