POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- In a heavy snowstorm that poured several inches of snow, the Vassar College women's soccer team fell 4-0 to Union College in the final game of the season on Saturday at Gordon Field.
The snow-covered field made quite a task of even the simplest movement and ball control but Union was able to advance the ball through air and maintain enough footing to score three second half goals.
Union broke the game open with a goal by Mollie Gilchrist in the 33rd minute on a long through ball from Jennifer Mansfield. Gilchrist beat the defense down the middle and finished with a shot on the ground to past charging keeper for a 1-0 Union lead.
The Dutchwomen warmed up quickly in the second half with a goal in the 47th minute by Jessica Strang on an assist across the box from Mollie Gilchrist to extend the lead to 2-0. Gilchrist scored her second goal of the game in the 57th minute as she recovered a loose ball in the box, beat a defender, and slipped a shot past the keeper for a 3-0 lead.
Union's Giovanna Velardo capped the scoring with a goal in the 63rd minute as she eluded the keeper and then found the empty net for the 4-0 final. The game was called in the 71st minute due to inclement weather.
Vassar keeper Ali Higgins made five saves in the losing effort and Mia Simone made three saves to earn the win for Union.
Vassar ends the season with a 7-9-1 record, 2-5-1 in the Liberty League. Union finishes 13-4-1 with a 3-4-1 record in the Liberty League.
