Moran leads Dutchwomen to first win, 8-1 over Morrisville

Caroline Moran scored four goals to lead the Union College field hockey team to an 8-1 victory over Morrisville State in a non-league contest at Bailey Field Tuesday. It was Union's first win of the season in 10 contests, while Morrisville fell to 0-7.

The Dutchwomen jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead en route to the victory. Union had a 29-7 shot advantage for the game, and goaltender Mary McCune made five saves for Union. Laura Blumenfeld stopped 11 for the Mustangs. Union had 14 corners to the Mustangs' seven.

Moran opened the scoring at 1:42. She broke in alone on the right side and her drive low in the middle scored the unassisted goal. Nicole Merigliano made it 2-0 for the Dutchwomen at 14:11. She was on the right doorstep and took a nice feed from Natalie Engel to notch her second of the season.

Moran's fifth of the year and second of the day at 20:17 came off a penalty corner. She took a blast from 11 yards out and the shot tipped off the goaltender's foot and high into the net for a 3-0 advantage. Isabel Zellweger scored at 33:44 for the 4-0 lead. A shot from Kelsey MacElroy was redirected 10 yards out from Zellweger, who converted her fourth of the year.

Union made it 5-0 when Moran scored her third of the day and #5 for 2011 with a shot off a rebound directly in front. Moran tallied again at 40:28 with a shot off a corner from Isabel Zellweger for her 7th of the year and #4 for the day.

Rebecca Quacknbush notched her fourth of the yeaer with a shot directly out in front at 54:50, but Union got it back to a six goal lead with Allison Troy scoring on the left corner from Natalie Engel's pass at 56:39. With just 11 seconds remaining, Emily Finneran wrapped up the scoring and provided the 8-1 final with a pass from Grace Mooney.

Union plays on the road for the time in the regular season on Saturday. The Dutchwomen are at SUNY New Paltz for a 1 p.m. start, then play the final six regular season contests all at home at Bailey Field.
